Bang Cho Obituary, Los Angeles, CA Death: Lavonta Wilder Charged For Murder

A 40-year-old man is facing a murder charge after prosecutors say he violently assaulted and later set fire to an 84-year-old man with dementia who had wandered away from a senior care facility.

According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, the incident occurred just before midnight in downtown Los Angeles. The victim, identified as Bang Cho, was reported missing from his care home after wandering away due to his medical condition.

Prosecutors allege that the victim encountered the suspect, Lavonta Wilder, while walking in the area and briefly came into contact with Wilder’s belongings. Authorities say the situation escalated into a physical confrontation that left the elderly man critically injured. He was transported to a hospital, where he died the following day.

Wilder, who is experiencing homelessness, was arrested and charged with murder. Prosecutors also filed a special allegation noting a prior serious felony conviction. He is scheduled for arraignment next month.

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman condemned the attack, describing it as a “brutal and extreme act of violence” against a particularly vulnerable individual.

Officials say the investigation remains ongoing as they review surveillance footage, witness statements, and forensic evidence. The care facility from which the victim wandered may also face scrutiny regarding supervision protocols.

Community members and advocacy groups have expressed shock and grief over the incident, calling attention to the vulnerability of individuals living with dementia and the need for stronger safeguards for elderly residents who are at risk of wandering.

The case is expected to proceed to trial following arraignment.
