Marion County is reeling from an unimaginable tragedy following a devastating single-vehicle crash that claimed the lives of 17-year-old Braden Canterberry and 20-year-old Braxton Canterberry. The young men, beloved members of the Brilliant community, died early Wednesday morning, leaving their families and friends to cope with a profound and heart-wrenching loss.
According to authorities, the tragic events unfolded around 2:00 a.m., when deputies were called to reports of teenagers gathering and drinking at a location known as the “gravel pit” on County Road 36. While en route, deputies observed a silver Toyota 4Runner speeding in the area. Police Chief Skylar Handley stated that although emergency lights were activated, a pursuit was not initiated. Moments later, deputies discovered the same vehicle had crashed nearby.
Investigators confirmed that three occupants were inside the vehicle at the time of the crash, and all three were ejected upon impact, highlighting the violent nature of the accident. Both Braden and Braxton were pronounced dead at the scene. Braden, a senior at Brilliant High School, was a young man with his whole future ahead of him. Braxton, also well-known in the community, leaves behind a legacy of cherished memories.
An 18-year-old passenger survived but suffered critical injuries. The teen was airlifted to UAB Hospital for urgent medical treatment. The condition of the injured passenger has not been updated as of the latest reports.
The loss of Braden and Braxton has deeply shaken the community. Chief Handley remarked that all three individuals were personally known by many in the area, amplifying the grief felt by classmates, neighbors, and friends. Brilliant Schools issued a statement offering condolences and providing additional counseling resources to support those affected by the loss.
