Lisa Russell Obituary, Bridgeport, AL Death: Community Mourns A Loss

The Jackson County community is mourning the death of 54-year-old Lisa Russell, who was found inside her home on 6th Street following a house fire that authorities have since classified as a homicide. What initially appeared to be a tragic structure fire quickly escalated into a criminal investigation after responders discovered evidence of foul play at the scene.

Emergency crews were dispatched on Wednesday evening after reports of a residential fire. Firefighters worked to extinguish the flames before entering the home, where they located Russell deceased inside. Investigators later determined that the circumstances were not consistent with an accidental fire, prompting the involvement of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and the Alabama State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Sheriff Rocky Harren confirmed that 62-year-old John Dunagan has been arrested and charged with murder in connection with Russell’s death. Authorities say a citizen tip played a critical role in locating Dunagan shortly after he fled the area. He was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Jackson County Jail. Officials have not yet released details regarding a possible motive.

The Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences is conducting an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death, while fire investigators continue to examine whether the blaze was intentionally set. Additional charges, including arson, have not been ruled out as the investigation develops.

Russell’s death has deeply shaken the small Bridgeport community, where she was known as a caring and steady presence. Friends, neighbors, and coworkers have expressed shock and grief, remembering her for her kindness and dedication to others.

Local officials have extended condolences to her family and urged the public to remain patient as investigators work to establish a clear timeline of events. A community vigil is being planned as residents gather to honor her memory.

As the case moves forward, authorities say justice remains the priority in what they describe as a deeply troubling and tragic incident.
